Go to College Online
Now is the time to return to school. Take advantage during these economic times by enrolling in an online university.

For anyone who has been hanging around for a while, you might remember the RagamuffinTop Challenge from last year. Basically, it was a way for me and anyone else out there who wanted to lose some weight to do so with online accountability. For me, it was a success. Since starting it, I have managed to lose around 55-60 pounds, and I feel better than ever.

Lately, though, I have been slipping a little, so I think it’s time to start a new challenge.

So I present to you the BigRigg Challenge.

Why “BigRigg” (and for that matter, why 2 “g”’s in “Rigg”?)  Well, my nickname has been BigRigg since middle school, and it is fitting, being that I am a big guy and all.

So here’s how it works for anyone wanting to participate:

  • Get a scale
  • Set a goal for how much weight you want to lose.  Maybe 10% of your total weight.
  • Weigh yourself every week on the same day, and videotape it if you want
  • Comment on my blog posts with your progress, or post it to youtube, Twitter, or post it to your own blog if you want to.  The point is, get that video out there so we can all see your progress
  • If you still are confused, watch one of my old RagamuffinTop Challenge videos.  It’s simple.

See, if you know that you are going to have to post video proof out on the Internet for ALL to see, it makes GREAT incentive to try and eat healthy and exercise during the week.

Now, please take note of this:  You will have successes AND failures, and that is ok.  THAT is why we are all here… to celebrate the successes and to encourage each other through the failures.

Ok, who’s in??

Adam, first let me say I miss your music at church. Bryan Coats told me you were working on your weight loss and I have too. I've been doing Weight Watchers for 7 weeks and have lost 18 lbs. (I've already met my 10% and I'm 5 lbs away from my goal weight). I have been exercising every day and I feel great (my knees would probably argue with that statement!--lol) I just wanted to drop you a line and say good luck with your challenge.
  • Hey Lora! I did WeightWatchers several years back, and it really is the best thing out there. Make sure you go to http://dwlz.com/restaurants.html before you ever go out to eat. They have TONS of restaurants with point values on there! Thanks for the wishes, and feel free to take part in the challenge!
  • I am in for this. I am not going to start immediately because I am sick at the moment, but next week, I will make a video with my initial weigh in. Are you setting a goal date or just a goal weight?
  • I think just a goal weight for now. I have no sense of what is a reasonable amount of time.
  • I can't afford to lose the 16 pounds this would require...but I will be cheering you all on!!!!
  • thanks MTAE... you helped a lot last time, so I appreciate it!
  • Jo Mama
I'm in. I only have about 5 pounds to lose, but I haven't been able to get them off! Probably the cake and Mexican food I've been enjoying on a consistent basis??
  • there is a very good chance of that!
  • Wow! Great video! I may just do this after seeing this video. :)
  • Oh please do!
  • anthonydodd
I'm all in, I have posted my first video weigh-in. Good Luck to ALL!
  • Awesome, man. Good luck!
  • fivemos (Michelle)
Great Video Adam! Still thinking about this! I want too but you have no idea how ditzy I am. It would require a lot for me to figure out this whole video thing out... :) And the idea of posting my weight to the whole world :) I am proud of you though. Great job keeping most of the weight off! I will at least be one of your biggest cheerleaders :)
  • well, you don't HAVE to do a video, but seriously, the accountability is a big part of it all, and you'll have that here...
  • cool video. I have been watching what i eat, exercising & keeping a food log......Ive lost 50lbs in 3 months (went from 370 to 317), but like you I have started slacking, especially this past week....Im gonna try to participate in this challenge & record my 1st video soon.......
  • 50 pounds in 3 months is awesome. I look forward to seeing the video, make sure you add a link to it in the little link thing at the bottom of the post!
  • While I'm too lazy for videos and the like, I wanted to thank you for posting your weight-loss progress since you started last year. We both started weight-loss efforts around the same time, but didn't stick with it. But seeing you keep going got me back on the wagon. Using The Daily Plate (http://www.livestrong.com/thedailyplate/) I've lost an additional 20 pounds over the past 3 months. My goal is to get my BMI under 30 (moving me from OBESE to plain old OVERWEIGHT). 32 pounds to go!
  • That's awesome! Yeah, I have recently fallen off of the wagon, so this will hopefully kick me in the pants where I need it. If you blog, or even Tweet about it, add the link every week so we can keep up. Good luck, man.
  • One nice reward for me was buying new pants last week. I'm wearing a 36 waist for the first time since Freshman year of college, AND I bought "straight leg" instead of the usual "loose fit". Awwwwww yeah.
  • Yes! I experienced that same feeling a few weeks back when I went to the outlet stores to get some new clothes. I too am in a 36 for the first time since College, and it feels WONDERFUL. By the way, if you can find a Men's Experss near you, try on their "loose" pants. I wear a 34 in those. A 34!!!!
  • Thanks for the tip on Live Strong's Daily Plate, I am so addicted. I am spending so much time researching healthy foods, and I have started to track my calorie consumption.
  • OK, I did my weigh in this morning. I am at 220lb even. My goal is 25 pounds. Started my morning with a light yogurt and a Gatorade G2, instead of the usual bagel and coffee w/ sugar and milk. Sorry no video, I just didn't feel like busting out the flip this morning.

I would love to get some discussion going on how people are changing their routine to meet their goal weights. i.e. food changes, exercises, ...
  • Sounds like we're at about the same current weight and weight goal (although you're probably taller than me and therefore less overweight).

One big change I've made has been in breakfast. I always start out with a bowl of high fiber cereal (the "Fiber One" with 56% of my daily fiber works well and is only 100 calories for a bowl WITH MILK), as this is good for me and takes the edge off of my morning hunger. I follow that up with a second breakfast about 3 hours later (usually a whole wheat English muffin with reduced sugar Raspberry preserves on it). This leaves me well over a thousand calories for lunch, dinner and snacks to stay on my safe 2-lbs-a-week goal. Lean Cuisine for lunch and dinner isn't easy on the wallet, but then I know exactly how many calories I'm eating and it's something tasty to look forward to.
  • I have tried to get into those Lean Cuisine meals, but I find them nasty tasting. For lunch, I will normally stick to a sandwich and some baked chips. Dinner is where I struggle. I am not much of a cooker, so I need tips on super easy healthy meals that stay in the 400 - 600 calorie range.
  • Kraftfoods.com has some easy, tasty recipes at (and under) that calorie range. For example, these Bruschetta 'n Cheese-Stuffed Chicken Breasts are pretty easy to make (buy dried basil and save the effort of chopping fresh basil) and they're only 280 calories a serving: http://www.kraftfoods.com/kf/recipes/bruschetta...
  • Thanks, that Stuffed Chicken you linked to looks good. I will have to try that. Thanks for the tip on Kraftfoods.com that is a very informative site.

I like to cook a whole package of chicken breast on the grill on Sunday afternoon, then freeze them. They warm nicely in the microwave in the evenings. Since I work a lot of hours at the office, this makes a quick trip home for dinner a possibility instead of the same old fast food.
  • AdamsMom
Chris, I will sometimes take a bag of broccoli/cauliflower, zap it in a corningware dish in the microwave, then drain it and put a couple of ounces of velveeta light on it, as well as cutting up some deli ham or turkey. Mix it all up with seasonings of choice, and within a total of 5 minutes you have a meat and veggie casserole in one dish. Fresh, hot, healthy, and fast!
  • Thanks for the tip, I will have to try this.
  • AdamsMom
Jason, I used to eat Fiber One but changed over to Kashi's "Go Lean". It also has very high fiber, but also has very high protein, so you stay full longer. In weight watcher terms, the Kashi is 1 point more than the Fiber One. Give it a try!
  • fallonbrooks
I posted a quick video response on Friday. It's from my phone since I was at the office. Next week will be a little better. Thanks for doing this Adam! http://fallonbrooks.blogspot.com/2009/10/weight...
  • Just flip'd my first weigh in video. I lost an additional 10 pounds from the last time I weighed myself around 3 weeks ago. I use the Livestrong.com website religiously & credit my food log to my success so far. Anyway, good luck to everyone & hopefully I can lose at least 3 lbs by next weeks weigh in.......by for now.

Here is the link to my weigh in vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nkGeylCTh8
  • Awesome man. Good luck this week towards the 3 pounds, you can do it!
  • fallonbrooks

  • Wow, yeah, that's amazing. Way to go!
  • AdamsMom
You go! I'll be pulling for you! Great video, and you can be very very proud of your accomplishments thus far. Your family must be very proud of you! Keep it up.
