Next time you are approaching a red light and people are behind you, leave a car-length or so of space in front of you.  Then, while everyone is stopped.  Move you car up a few feet and stop.  Chances are, the car behind you will do it also.  Keep doing it and see how many times the person behind you will keep moving up.  It cracks me up only because I know that if the car in fron of me inches up, I will involuntarily do it also.

I just did this a little while ago.  I moved-and-stopped about 5 times, and each time, the person behind me did it to.  I was SO in control.

  • Hey funny traffic guy, here's another one. If you are in the middle of a line of cars try leaving 2 car lengths between you and the car in front of you while stopped and see if I don't start cursing at you!

  • I have to admit, I dislike it when people leave that kind of room in front of them at a red light. When the person in front of me inches forward, I VOLUNTARILY do it too because I know someone coming from a parking lot, ally, or other intersection might need some room to get in at the end of the line.

    I'm all for experimenting in the name of social science though. ;-)

  • I should clarify. I only do this when the person behind me isn't paying attention. You know, the cell phone-ers. Other than that, I always scoot up as much as I can to make room!

  • I usually just creep along until the light changes... I never really put up to the light and just stop... it bothers me to not be in motion.

  • Ohhhh, people like you are sent to TRY me!!!!! I hate when people pull that stunt!! Though, most of the time, I don't reckon they even know they're doing it! You doing it for fun is just plain EVIL and is resulting in people like me having blood pressure issues!!!!! :-D
